4-Year-Old Accidentally Shot His Mom
A 31-year-old woman from Florida has been accidentally shot in the back by her 4-year-old son while she was driving. The woman is now in stable condition, PEOPLE confirmed.
According to the Putnam County investigators in Florida, the non-fatal shooting happened on Tuesday afternoon when Jamie Gilt was driving down the highway.
The police said that a .45-caliber handgun was found on the floor of the truck. Gilt was then taken to the Gainesville Hospital. Authorities are currently investigating.
“She was shot through the seat and the round went through her back,” according to Wells.
“There was a booster seat in the back of the vehicle, but however the boy was not strapped in when the deputy got to them,” he added.
According to Wells, the investigators are trying to find out whether the child was fastened to the booster set when Gilt was shot.
Police authorities say that depending on what they will learn during their investigation, Gilt may end up facing criminal charges. When the incident happened, the small child was on the backseat of the vehicle, behind his mother. He somehow got his mom’s handgun, the statement said.
The truck, which had a horse trailer at the back, was partially parked in the travel lane of Florida 20, police says. The family members said that Gilt was driving her truck to pick up a horse from her relative’s farm. According to a statement made by the police, the detectives are still investigating the incident so as to determine exactly how the firearm was kept in the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Gilt’s son is currently under the custody of the relatives, the police said.
The Florida Department of Children and Family Services, on the other hand, are currently conducting their own investigation of the shooting incident, according to the police.
