New cyclone develops near Cook Islands
Tuesday, February 09, 2010
The whether office says it's unlikely the latest cyclone to develop near the Cook Islands will be as destructive as last week's Cyclone Oli.
Oli tore across the Cooks, before battering French Polynesia - destroying hundreds of homes.
Now Cyclone Pat, is brewing about 300 kilometres south east of the island of Manihiki in the northern island group of the Cook Islands.
A cyclone warning has been issued in the area.
However, forecaster Alipate Waqaicelua says it’s unlikely to match the category four Cyclone Oli.
He says cyclone Pat is only a category two and it’s changing its path.
While Oli moved towards the south-east Pat's projected path is expected to make towards the other direction, towards the west.
