
The striking miners have been complaining of substandard housing, lack of protection for workers and poor labor conditions.
The Fiji Mine Workers Union has now taken its grievances to the International Labor Organization and the Human Rights Council in Switzerland.
This is with regards to the plight of the Vatukoula gold miners, who have been on strike for 19 years now.
Union president Josefa Sadreu says they don’t have any other avenues left in Fiji to explore their grievances because it’s been ignored by successive governments.
"Vatukoula Mineworkers Union have been through five Presidents, 11 Prime Ministers and 14 Ministers for Labor and yet none of these governments have ever done anything about the rights of the mineworkers..."

As of 2007, the Union is claiming a $30 million bill for unpaid wages and this submission is before the current government.
