Video piracy affecting local business

Monday, April 14, 2008

Video retailer Video Ezy will close its Lautoka branch this week due to the alaring increase in video piracy.

Company director Uday Singh says the alarming increase has forced the company to close its third branch since the beginning of the year.

Singh says DVD and VCD sales have dropped 80 to 90 per cent this year.

The company has already closed its Lautoka, Tamavua and Ellery Street shops sending six staff members home.

Another three will lose their jobs when the Lautoka branch closes leaving Video Ezy with only two out of five branches still in operation.

Singh says he has made submissions to the government, the attorney general, police and the military.

“Due to continued piracy we have no other option but to close our shop. We have invited a number of delegates from Fiji and abroad in October 2006 including the Fiji Police Force in terms of raiding a number of shops since then no prosecution has taken place.

“We have lost close to 80 to 90 percent of our sale because of piracy,” he added.
