FSC employee questioned over scam

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

A Fiji Sugar Corporation employee was taken in for questioning yesterday morning in relation to the nursing scam investigations.

Divisional Crime Officer Northern Luke Rawalai says the questioning was a continuance of a similar one held last Friday with the same man.

Rawalai says they have received four more complaints from families of girls who claim they paid in kind to secure a place for their children at the Fiji School of Nursing.

He says these fresh complaints from families claim they gave goats and other livestock to the alleged agents of the former assistant minister accused of receiving cash in return promising to secure places at FSN.

Rawalai says the new complaints have boosted the total number of complainants to fourteen.

He adds that these new complaints only surfaced after the investigations were publicized and that they expect to receive more.

Rawalai says police believes the FSC employee acted as an agent on behalf of the assistant minister collecting cash from parents who were disappointed their children’s names never appeared in the nursing intake lists in 2005 and early 2006.

The man was released at about midday.

He adds that the total amount involved in this scam is within the range of 35 to 40 thousand dollars.
