Fiji could miss deadlineTuesday, May 13, 2008
Fiji and six other Pacific nations with credible claims for an extension of their exclusive economic zones may miss the May 2009 deadline. Radio Australia states that the Pacific Islands Applied Geo-science Commission, or SOPAC, says these countries may struggle to get their submissions to the UN. SOPAC says it has limited technical and financial capacity and a lack of external support is impeding the submission process. SOPAC in collaboration with Geo-science Australia and the United Nations - is holding a week-long workshop in Suva to assist to Fiji, Cook Islands, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, Tonga and Papua New Guinea prepare their claims.
