No Charter, No Elections: Bainimarama

Monday, September 08, 2008

Bainimarama has reiterated his position that there will not be any elections if there's no Charter. Taken from / By: Google

Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama says if it takes 20 years to gather support for the People’s Charter, then that is how long Fiji will have to do without elections.

Bainimarama has made the comments in an exclusive interview with Radio Fiji News.

He was reiterating his position that there will not be any elections if there is no charter.

In trying to emphasise his point, Bainimarama told Radio Fiji News that if there is no charter in 20 years, there will be no elections either.

However he has urged those opposing the Charter to come forward and discuss their concerns about the document through the NCBBF.

"The Charter, within the charter is the reforms, especiall the electoral reforms. We are not going to go back to the electoral system that we used in the 2001 and 2006 raced based electoral system. We are not going to back there. We want to look forward to better days for Fiji. So the charter needs to be endorsed for that reason. Without the Charter, without that electoral reform there will be no elections."

Bainimarama says there have been numerous negative reactions towards the idea of Fiji not having elections.

"There is talk of doom and gloom from a lot of people, from Waqairatu, from Qarase and Mick Beddoes and Pramod Rae, if doom and gloom is all they see, doom and gloom they will go. I want to keep us on the vision of the charter to take us to a better Fiji, that is where we want to go."
