Young prison population a serious concernWednesday, October 15, 2008
Almost all Pacific Island countries have a very young prison population where the majority of prisoners are between the ages of 19 to 20 years. This information was disclosed in national reports tabled at the Prisons Conference held at the Forum Secretariat. Amongst other significant matters, this has been identified as a sensitive issue and of serious concern. Deputy Commissioner Prisons Auta Moceisuva says in order to curb the growth of crime the correctional services system imperatively needs to develop programmes that are suitable for young offenders. He says Fiji’s Prisons and Correctional service has now introduced numeracy, literacy, counselling and vocational training in the rehabilitation programs to augment the skills of young inmates.
