Set a firm date for polls: ChaudhryMonday, October 27, 2008
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry says he will use today's meeting of political parties to tell the interim prime minister he must set a firm date for the country's election. Interim prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will meet with representatives from the political parties today. But Commodore Bainimarama has told those attending that they have no right to make any demands, in particular on elections. Chaudhry says his party accepts the election promised for next year will not happen, but the country needs to know when it will be held. Chaudhry says the interim government cannot continue to prolong this climate of political uncertainty because it is having a detrimental effect on our economy, as well as our regional and international relations. He adds that the interim government needs to set a proper timeline then work towards meeting those timelines. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation
