Fiji PM allows overseas press in countryThursday, April 16, 2009
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has given his approval for overseas media to come and see for themselves what is really happening here in Fiji. Speaking to FBCL news this morning Bainimarama says however – those who report on negatives issues about the country are not welcome citing overseas journalists like Michael Field and Barbra Dreaver. He says the Public Emergency Regulations now in place for the local media industry also applies to them while in Fiji. “There has been a lot of miss-information that has been sent across to overseas media outlets that I am very concerned about,” said Bainimarama. “I understand they are still showing clips of the 1987 and the 2000 events which s not true of what is happening here in Fiji right now,” he said. “I have given my endorsement for those overseas media outlets that wants to come and visit Fiji and find out for themselves what’s happening on the ground to come,” he added. “However we are not going to let in the people that we did not allow in the first place, people like Michael Field, but the rest of the media outlets in Australia and New Zealand, the TV stations, the radio broadcasters, if the want to come, they can come.” Fiji Broadcasting Corporation LTD |
