INVESTIGATIONS into the death of a newborn infant in Taveuni continue as police attempt to identify the baby’s mother.
Police have intensified their inquiries along Naselesele and nearby settlements including Sisila where the baby girl was found.
The islands police confirmed they have interviewed several including one woman who was later released.
The biggest puzzle for police to solve is the identity of the baby’s mother.
There are several expectant mothers within the area of crime and police say identifying the right woman without the proof of medical examination is a difficult since no one is coming forward.
The infant was abandoned beside a home at Sisila last Saturday.
Station Officer Taveuni Kolinio Vunaki says a post mortem examination will be carried out once the services of a pathologist is secured.
