Censorship extended till AugustTuesday, June 23, 2009
The Public Emergency Regulation, which empowers the Fiji Government to censor the media and prohibit meetings, will be extended for two more months. Government and military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni confirms the Public Emergency Regulations will be extended to the end of August. The Public Emergency Regulation, which is reviewed on a monthly basis, was to end on July 10. However, with various meetings and events scheduled for the next two month, in a statement – it says that Government has seen it necessary to extend the Public Emergency Regulation till the end of August. Leweni had said in an earlier report that Fiji as a whole has benefited from the emergency regulations since it was first imposed on April 10th following the abrogation of the country’s Constitution.
