FINTEL: Telecom will have to pay more

Thursday, August 06, 2009

Telecom Fiji will have to pay more to FINTEL for hosting international phone calls because the current pricing arrangement is not viable for FINTEL.

This is the issue that FINTEL is taking to the negotiating table when they are going to meet with Telecom Fiji to negotiate a new pricing structure which the Fiji Government hopes will be finalized by Wednesday next week.

FINTEL manager corporate services Samu Samuta revealed that the 31 cents given by the Commerce Commission in 2007 is not enough to cover the cost of calls to international destinations.

Samuta says FINTEL has to bear the loses of carrying those calls for some time due to high termination charges imposed by countries where their rates are charged in US dollars.

For the Solomon Islands alone, FINTEL has to pay US 40 cents per minute, for Tonga FINTEL has to pay US 30 cents per minute and the same is for other selected destinations.
