Commissioner of Prisons to focus on reducing number of inmates

Monday, July 30, 2007

THE new Commissioner of Prison says he will continue to pursue his goal to reduce the number of prisoners in the country.

Commissioner Iowane Naivalurua says he believes the society would appreciate this move for a better Fiji.

Naivalurua says prisoners are human beings who can be motivated to return to their society with a positive attitude.

Naivalurua added it is not easy to achieve this goal – but prisoners should be given an opportunity.

"We all know we are limited with many resource that is the major constraints the resources the situation we are in now,but what we basically done is that we have identified what we want to do and we have approached it with commitments hard work innovative ideas so some of these things can be done within in what we have decided before we really want to change a reform process in prison but it will not come out easy."

"People are comfortable with work, where they are and what they are doing so basically what I have done is we got out of our comfortable zone if you remain in a comfortable zone you will not be able to do what we are doing right now, you cannot be in operative, we cannot be committed because you sitting there and you said why should I work, I came with a different attitude."
