Fiji is threatening PACER Plus pull outWednesday, October 21, 2009
Fiji will not be a party to any agreement that will be reached at the Pacific Trade Ministers PACER Plus framework agreement meet which starts in Australia tomorrow. Fiji has been barred from attending any Forum Islands related events or meetings because of its military government. Since then, the founding Forum nation has been offered alternative arrangements to allow Fiji to participate in the PACER Plus negotiations but it has being refused. Instead Fiji has invoked Article 15 of the PACER Plus Agreement which ensures that Fiji can still be part of the negotiations and other nations should answer in good faith. However the Fiji government remains optimistic that island countries which have yet to respond, will favorably reassess our request in the spirit of cooperation and with a view to progressing regional integration in the Pacific.
