FSC ethanol project on hold indefinitelyFriday, October 30, 2009
The Fiji Sugar Corporation has indefinitely deferred its ethanol production and co-generation projects in order to concentrate on improving its milling efficiencies. FSC board chairman Gautam Ramswarup says unless and until the milling efficiencies in Lautoka, Rarawai and Labasa Mills improve, none of their revenue generating project will be undertaken. “Feasibility studies have been done on this and this is under consideration within our set up but our position really is that we are focusing on getting our milling right and our crush done before we focus on other aspects. As I have mentioned before, we are focusing on our core business which is milling before we can focus on our diversification projects.” These diversification programs were set up by Government to provide alternative revenue streams for FSC, in light of the proposed reduction in the European Commission’s preferential sugar prices. These programs will only be considered after the completion of upgrade works and Ramswarup adds this also means delaying the construction of the new FSC headquarters. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
