Leweni calls on Aust/NZ to be reasonableMonday, November 02, 2009
The Fiji Government is calling on the Australia and New Zealand governments to be reasonable with their travel ban, and not to victimize members and potential members of the judiciary. The permanent secretary for Information, Lieutenant-Colonel Neumi Leweni called Australia and New Zealand’s moves to prevent Sri Lankan lawyers from taking up positions in Fiji’s judiciary as draconian and inhumane. Lt Col Leweni says the two countries should not confuse the judiciary’s independent role from the socio-political and economic reforms the Government is now undertaking through its Strategic Framework for Change plans. He adds that the governments of Australia and New Zealand should just concentrate on facilitating the peaceful and speedy transition of Pacific Islands nations from our ‘developing phase’ to a ‘developed state’.
