India ready to assist FijiFriday, November 13, 2009
The Indian Government is willing to assist Fiji to return to democracy and is offering help in electoral reforms. Indian High Commissioner- Professor Prabhakara Jha says Fiji had made an initial request for 10 electronic voting machines to be brought to Fiji but no formal request has been made. "As we’ve been telling people very clearly that Government of India’s foreign policy is based on co existence- on the 5 principles of co-existence," he said. "We are neutral. We do no interfere in the internal affairs of any country but our conviction is that election must take place." "Elections should take place but I have made several times very open suggestion that whatever help you want for the purpose of election, Government of India is ready because Government of India had told me," said Jha. "And Government of India as far as election is concerned, we are ready." The Indian Government had already paid for a team from the Electoral Commission of Fiji had asked for assistance in sending a team of four to India and wanting to go and see the electronic voting system there- with the entire cost paid by the Indian Government.
