China's trade with Fiji booms: studyWednesday, November 18, 2009
China's trade with Fiji has seen explosive growth in the past decade. According to a new study by the ANZ Bank, Fiji and other Pacific Island countries like Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga have grown substantially. It found total trade grew from 180 million US dollars in 2001 to over 1.2 billion US dollars in 2008. During that period, Pacific imports from China grew at a sizzling annual average rate of 40.7 per cent, while exports grew at 28.7 per cent. This rapid growth saw China surpass the United States, the European Union and Japan as the Pacific’s biggest trading partner, placing it on a par with New Zealand. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
