Wasawasa FestivalThursday, November 19, 2009
The Wasawasa Dawn Festival will bring the Pacific people together through the art of canoe culture. The festival which is organized by the Fiji Arts Council will be held on the 21st of this month-and is aimed at encouraging talented artists to showcase their work in the form of poetry and writing. Speaking to FBC News Fiji Arts council Director Letila Mitchell shares more insight into the Wasawasa Dawn Festival and what the festival symbolizes in terms of the Pacific Culture. “Basically, the reason behind launching the canoes at dawn is. Whenever you want to bless a canoe it is usually done at the breaking of dawn. To symbolize the birth of something new, so the festival will start at dawn and there are a total of seven canoes that will be launched and this festival is also promoting the Ocean Noise project which is basically a method to stop the and eradicate the increase in noise pollution being brought about through shipping etc.” Mitchell adds that the Wasawasa Festival will begin from tomorrow with a Visual Arts Exhibition that will be held at the Fiji Museum. The Fiji Arts Council has also organized canoe making workshops that will be held at Albert Park this Saturday after the Launching of the canoes. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
