Drought to worsen

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Drought in most parts of the group is now expected to further worsen as the effect of El Nino is likely to intensify, the National Weather Office says.

The director of meteorology Rajendra Prasad says this could severely affect the agricultural sector, water supply and water levels at dams.

“The El-Nino phenomena is really sort of having its dominant effect where by it causes the weather systems to fizzle out by the time they come to our latitudes,” said Prasad.

“So in this case its similar kind of pattern I would say given the quiet dramatic effect of the El-Nino its hardly the country can expect any big rainfall event,” he said.

“The fact is that the El-Nino effect is there or here and it is expected to continue, given that the bulk of the country has been facing fairly dry conditions,” he said.

“This condition will continue for a while at least end of December or beyond could be in January as well and that means the situation faced right now is expected to get to worse for a while before any improvement takes place,” predicted Prasad.

Prasad says while drought effects can be felt in the western division even the central division is not receiving its share of rainfall now and whatever is falling in this division is very light showers rather than heavy falls.
