UNICEF on Child Labour

Friday, November 20, 2009

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the ratification on the convention of the rights of the child.

It is very significant to Fiji as latest statistics show that over ninety percent of children in the country are involved in the worst from of labour-primarily sex work or prostitution.

Statistics also show that the earliest age for a child to start work in this field is eight.

Speaking to FBC News UNICEF director Dr Isiye Tobi says that these statistics are very disappointing and that adults must be more aware of the rights children have and-for people involved in this illicit practice- they should really just thinking about this children as if they were a part of their family.

“That is a major violation on the rights of the child an for people involved in this practice.. they need to know that it is a major offence…I would put it this way…if every adult involved in this would think of this children as if they were their sister or brother…for instance in cases of violence…women who are abused need assistance and care and of course there would be more awareness brought about…this also applies in cases where there children are violated and forced to do such illicit acts…”

Tobi adds that they are working with government on creating better work ethics in addressing these issues.
