ECREA on social justiceSaturday, November 21, 2009
The Ecumenical Centre for Research Education and Advocacy is concerned that corporatising the private and public sector-will only make things even more difficult for people. ECREA’s Director Chantelle Khan says that achieving economic growth should never be done at the expense of social justice. Khan stresses that there should more consultation made on partnership between the public and private sector-especially for basic services like water. “We are concerned about private and public partnership concerning privatization and corporatising of some basic services like water,” she said. “What we are saying is that while there should be economic growth, we are really stressing, as we have been for a number of years is that it should be done at the expense of social justice,” said Khan. “We understand the culture of greed unrestricted profits which companies in our present economic system tend to exploit workers through low wages and poor working conditions and they use monopolies to keep higher prices,” added Khan. Khan states that there should be a budget which is people centered-a budget which addresses the needs of the people while encouraging economic growth. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
