Pageant officially beginsSaturday, November 21, 2009
A minor glitch with the sound system at the opening ceremony of the 23rd South Pacific Pageant resulted in the contestants being moved from the stage to the podium where the ceremony was completed. However this glitch failed to stop people flock to the Albert Park to catch a glimpse of beauties from 13 island nations in the South Pacific competing for the PBS Miss South Pacific title. The opening ceremony started off with a minute of silence to remember those lives lost during the Fiji floods in January, those that lost their lives and were affected by the tsunami in Samoa, Tonga and American Samoa and also the victims of the Princess Ashika tragedy. Following that was the hoisting of the flags of each of the 13 nations represented – together with their national anthem. Chief Guest and Minister for Women Jiko Luevni encouraged the women to do their best to make their nation proud. Tonight is the Taukei Night and the public is invited to join the entertainment at Albert Park at 7pm. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
