Elvis ready to fight

Monday, November 23, 2009

Taken from / By: Elvis - the fire fighting air crane

Victoria's firefighting capacity has been boosted with the arrival of the water-bombing helicopter known as Elvis.

The orange aircrane has become one of the most recognisable and reassuring sights of the bushfire season.

It arrived late last week, was assembled over the weekend, and was put through its paces on a test run this morning at Essendon airport.

The aircrane can drop 9,000 litres of water or foam at low speed and is part of a fleet of around 200 aircraft that can be called on when fires flare.

Elvis will be joined by another giant fire fighting helicopter called Elise in December.
