Residents awake to shaky start

Monday, November 23, 2009

Residents of Bulabula in Ba and parts of Tavua were this morning woken to a shaky start to their day.

A minor quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale struck leaving many to wonder whether it was a quake or the effect of dynamites going off at the Vatukoula mines.

The quake struck 25 kilometers south west of Tavua.

A resident of Bulabula, Ba- Radhen Prasad says they felt the tremor as their house shook. No damage was reported.

“We felt the tremor here and before it came occasionally like this. We thought it was just because of Vatukoula dynamite but it has been happening now and then. So we felt it about 9:45. So far no damage has been done. We felt the shaking of houses and louver blades made noises. It lasted for about a few seconds.”

Prasad says they also felt tremors in their area last night too.

The World Seismic Graph states two other quakes occurred in the Fiji Region yesterday.

At 1.51pm,  a 5.3 magnitude quake struck at a depth of 621 kilometers.

The second and bigger one, measuring 6.3 struck at 506 kilometers in the Koro Sea area.
