Low wage 'a concern'Thursday, November 26, 2009
Concerns have been raised on the increase in low income earners in Fiji. Transport Workers Union general secretary Kamlesh Kumar says 17 former employees of Air Pacific Call Centre had to find alternative employment after the Call Centre was outsourced. Meanwhile Kumar says one of his members who is a former employee of Air Pacific reservation department has joined Mind Pearl. However he says the employee is earning less than what he used to at Air Pacific. "From what we know the person who has actually joined Mind Pearl from Air Pacific is being paid something like one third of what he was getting in Air Pacific, now our concern is if these call centers are coming in and perhaps creating more jobs but at what condition and salary benefits is of concerned to us." Kumar says he is trying to form a union in Mind Pearl for the benefit of all the workers. Meanwhile Mind Pearl could not be reached for a comment pertaining this particular issue.
