Economist on 2010 BudgetFriday, November 27, 2009
Anticipation is building as the country awaits the announcement of the 2010 budget by government later on this morning. Commerce Commission Chairman Dr Mahendra Reddy says the 2010 Budget should focus more on the growth of Fiji’s economy. He says Government should also outline plans to eradicate poverty and implement low income wage schemes. “The 2010 budget will definitely be focused more on growth but I believe that government should focus more on issues like poverty and low income households in general.” Reddy adds that much consideration has been given to the tourism industry as it is the current back bone of the Fiji economy. However he says there are a lot of other factors to consider as well with the marketing grants incurred from the tourism sector which have in the past contributed to a decline in the tourism industry. “That doesn’t mean that we just continue to focus on marketing grants... marketing grants are the result of the country current economic scenario…which has indefinitely contributed to the decline in the tourism industry… but we can hope that as the sector picks up…the marketing grants will fall and eventually phase out.” The Budget will be announced this morning at the Novotel Convention Centre in Lami.
