Miss Fiji Merewalesi Nailatikau was crowned New Miss Pacific Building Solutions South Pacific Pageant at Albert Park last night. It was a proud moment for Fiji including other Melanesian countries since it is the very first time a Melanesian contestant worn the Pageant crown since its inception in 1986. 24-year-old Merewalesi broke into tear when she was announced the winner. Ms Nailatikau dedicated her victory not only to Fiji but the South Pacific as a whole. While giving her speech after receiving the crown she took another opportunity to remind the leaders on the importance of creating awareness on climate change. “Climate change is a problem for us all, the need for some countries is more urgent than others and we must let the world know that a threat to one country is a threat to others,” she said. Meanwhile Ms Nailatikau also scooped other awards which included: Best Talent, Best Traditionally Inspired Costume, Fiji Times Best Interview with Media and Miss People’s Choice. And in other awards Miss Cook Islands Engara Gosselin was the first runner up and she also warn the Best Sarong award, the second runner up is Miss Aotearoa Pacific, third runner up is Miss Solomon Islands Millicent Barty whilst the fourth runner up award was given to Miss Samoa Tusisaleaia Pomele. The New Miss South Pacifici Pageant will represent the Pacific at World Trade Expo which will be held in Shanghai in China next month. Papua New Guinea will host the 2010 Miss South Pacific Pageant.
