Hospital staff charging public, investigation launched

Monday, November 30, 2009

The Ministry of Health is investigating hospital staff for charging members of the public with fees even though health-care in the country is free of charge.

Health Ministry spokesman Iliesa Tora says that there is no such fee and is cautioning the general public to be aware of this.

“the ministry would just like to advise members of the public that there is no such fee under the public health dispensaries act….we have received numerous complaints regarding this…so we would also like to let the public know that if they have been charged by hospitals to pay this instant reporting fee… please report it to Health HQ immediately and we will deal with it accordingly…”

The ministry is now working on cracking down hospital staff who have practicing this numerous complaints were filed with them.

Tora says that hospital staff may even face losing their jobs because they are manipulating the public.

“We will be vigorously chasing this as it is a matter of public interest… so yeah.. people will definitely be losing their jobs over this because the ministry will not tolerate this sort of thing…”

Tora adds that the only fees that charged by the ministry are X-RAY and CAT scan tests and members of the public are advised to report anyone charging fees at our public hospitals.
