Use Fiji's EEZ legally: DPP

Monday, February 08, 2010

The Director of Public Prosecutions Office is warning foreign vessels fishing in our waters – that they will be brought to justice if found using Fiji’s Exclusive Economic Zone illegally.

DPP Aca Rayawa says the long arm of the law will clamp down on those caught fishing illegally in Fiji’s E-E-Z.

The warning comes after the trial of a foreign fishing vessel master Lee I. Lang. Land was convicted of fishing within Fiji’s E-E=Z breaching the Marine Spaces Act.

Assessors returned a unanimous verdict of guilty.

The State has also filed submissions for the forfeiture to the State – of the fishing vessel valued at 164,000 dollars – and the proceeds of the sale of the catch on board the vessel amounting to more then 108,000 dollars.

The forfeiture hearing will be held on Wednesday – while LANG will be sentenced on Friday.
