Fiji coastal villagers urged to move inlandMonday, February 08, 2010
His plea comes following his recent visit to the island of Kadavu. Bainimarama says a lot of villages there had requested for their seawalls to be re-built. He told them government can easily re-build the seawall – but the increasing tide and clime change will take it down - again. "A couple of the villages have broken seawalls. I have told the people of Kadavu – who have damaged seawalls – they need to start looking at moving inland now. We can build seawalls tomorrow but in a couple of year’s time – it will be destroyed because of the rising tide and climate change. So is there are areas they can move into – upper areas – they should plan on moving in now." Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
