Fiji coastal villagers urged to move inlandMonday, February 08, 2010
Fiji’s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama is urging coastal villages to move inland. His plea comes following his recent visit to the island of Kadavu. Bainimarama says a lot of villages there had requested for their seawalls to be re-built. He told them government can easily re-build the seawall – but the increasing tide and clime change will take it down - again. "A couple of the villages have broken seawalls. I have told the people of Kadavu – who have damaged seawalls – they need to start looking at moving inland now. We can build seawalls tomorrow but in a couple of year’s time – it will be destroyed because of the rising tide and climate change. So is there are areas they can move into – upper areas – they should plan on moving in now." Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
