Elnino to stay longerTuesday, February 09, 2010
The El-Nino effect may remain in the country for a further 3 to 6 months. Director for meteorology Rajendra Prasad says it was previously anticipated to last until the end of April, however the reality is that the Elnino effect may last a few more months than what was first expected. "At this stage, the Elnino effect is having a dominant effect into Fiji’s weather and this may remain so, for another month or two. However, whenever an Elnino is forecasted, it usually is moderate and takes three to six months but in this case, it may a few months more, so in this particular scenario, we expect the Elnino to go into the dry season but for how long, it is hard to say." The Elnino Phenomenon which first hit the country towards the end of November last year - has had a damaging effect on sectors of the economy including water supply and agriculture.
