Waste separation soon for FijiWednesday, March 10, 2010
A pilot project aimed at introducing garbage separation in the country is currently being carried out in the suburbs of Nadi and Lautoka. The three year pilot project is being managed by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and aims to recycle bio-degradable waste from other household waste, before they reach the dump site. Acting Environment director Jope Davetanivalu says they’ve received a progress report of the project, and are assessing its effectiveness. Davetanivalu says some households within the trial suburbs have successfully derived compost from their waste, to plant crops. There are plans to introduce the concept Fiji-wide, after a three year trial. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
