Suspended sentence for manslaughterWednesday, March 10, 2010
A woman was given a two year suspended sentence today by the Suva High court after she was found guilty of manslaughter. 35 year old Mereoni Koroi stabbed her de-facto partner Savenava Cavalevu after an argument at the Kings hotel in November 2008. Both were drunk at the time of the incident. The court heard that the accused had chased the deceased out of her hotel room with the assistance of a security officer, but the deceased returned and started passing degrading remarks to the accused. The deceased wanted to perform sexual acts with the accused while her friends were listening. The accused took a kitchen knife that was beside the bed and stabbed the deceased twice on the chest. Justice Daniel Goundar says the accused was physically and emotionally abused by the deceased in the relationship as he was living off her earnings as a sex worker. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
