Forensic accountant calls on Anti-Corruption Commission to be independentThursday, November 01, 2007
Forensic accountant Rosie Langi said the Anti-Corruption Commission must be independent of the Police Department. Langi said FICAC needs to work smarter rather than harder because it is still a reactive unit that cannot independently take its cases to court because of the legality of its existence. “I personally think that FICAC is too pro-police officers,” said Langi. “What would FICAC end up is that those who come through Police Department will end up in high positions. For in that respect, I do not see forensic accountants preferring to work under police officers because forensic accounting is an expert in his or her own right. This is the person that ends up in court as an expert witness.” Langi a lecturer at the University of Fiji said the FICAC structure in which they have a forensic accountant to analysis financial statements and write reports while the rest of it is done by police investigators is not correct. “That needs to be change. Whoever analyzes the account statement must be the same person who follows up - so in other words we looking at a FICAC with forensic accountant certified fraud examiner who will complete the entire investigation and end up in court as the expert witness - rather than police officers who comes in - in between and try to complete the case without the accounting and financial background.” Fiji Broadcasting Corporation |
