Here’s a rather unusual story.
As the country goes into damage control in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Gene, the villagers of Natauloa on Nairai, in the Lomaiviti, have found a cause to celebrate.
Ten dead frogs have been washed ashore, and according to village spokesman Malani Vosa Colati, it’s the first time the villagers have seen the amphibious creatures.
Colati says he woke this morning to the sound of the excited villagers singing by the beach.
He says he saw villagers, who have never been off the island, celebrating the arrival of a new species of fish and were preparing a fire to fry them
.
Colati says when he saw the frogs he managed to stop what was turning out to be a village party.
The villagers were thankful anyway for Cyclone Gene, for creating a historical moment in their lives, by allowing them to catch their first ever glimpse of a frog.
Colati says the villagers are celebrating the occasion in the community hall with yaqona and a feast but the frogs are not on the menu.
