Understanding of Pacific problemsFriday, March 28, 2008
The Citizens Constitutional Forum says the Pacific Forum should have an understanding of the core problems that should be addressed in Fiji. It says these problems cannot be addressed by simply returning to a quick election. CCF chief executive Reverend Akuila Yabaki says he believes the proposed Peoples Charter should provide for cross-party political dialogue in achieving consensus. Rev Yabaki says the date of elections seems to be of primary importance to the Forum Ministers but no mention has been made of the core problems that Fiji is trying to tackle through dialogue within the Charter process. One example, he says is the race-based communal electoral system, which has failed to deliver social cohesion and inter-ethnic cooperation. Rev Yabaki says this has perpetuated the racial divide within the Fiji society as well as paralysed attempts to resolve major socio-economic and political problems facing the country.
