Australia skeptical about Fiji

Monday, March 31, 2008

Australia's travel bans will remain until Fiji shows concrete signs of progress towards a democratic election Taken from / By: Google

Australia's Foreign Minister Stephen Smith says travel restrictions against Fiji won't be lifted until the Interim Government of Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama makes substantial progress towards a democratic election.

Smith has told Auckland-based Pacific Radio News that there is optimism and skepticism about Fiji’s progress to free and fair polls.

He added Canberra has concerns that Commodore Bainimarama’s government views the Peoples Charter process as more important than an election.

The interview came at the end of a meeting of Pacific foreign ministers in Auckland last week to check progress in Fiji after the country’s fourth military coup in 2006.

Interim Foreign Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau told the special meeting that a detailed timetable for election preparation would be considered by Cabinet in the second week of April.
