While there is no competition in the domestic market for the military, there has been a revelation that there had been move to replace the Fiji Military Forces with a reinvigorated and robust police force.

In a message on the RFMF website, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said this move has become dormant now but cannot be ruled out in the future.

Commodore Bainimarama said regional and international competitors exist in the provision of peace support operations, protective security details, and private security companies.

In particular, he said the British Army and defence forces in the region, also New Zealand and Australia have opened their doors to both non trained and fully trained soldiers.

And to do that in crisis time in Fiji, he said seems suspect. According to the military Commander, this calls for the Military’s ability to continue to maintain its international image and reputation.

“It further calls for a re-examination of its critical success factors and the sustainment of those factors in the long term. And if not, the current knowledge and competency gap will continue to deteriorate to a stage where the RFMF will have to review its participation in international peace support organizations.”
